Aila Simpson

Ceramic vessels and sculpture

Aila Simpson’s Finnish heritage permeates through her work with texture, and fuses with colours that reflect her personality to become something truly unique and energetic.

Scandinavian design has always been about simplicity and strength, influenced by nature. Aila creates forms with a purity that feels organic and natural. Her colours are often vibrant and unspoilt, as if extracted from a plant. Since moving from her mother country, Finnish rock has come to represent a certain identity which could only be from Finland. It’s permanence and stability is reassuring, offering nostalgic memories of her childhood, playing on the rocks. The subtle colours and rough, and then smooth textures have always fascinated Aila, and this can really be seen in her work.
Much of her work is constructed by the slab technique, building with paper clay, which is then glazed and fired to earthenware temperature.
Aila offers one to one tuition in all aspects of hand built earthenware and stoneware ceramics, both vessels and sculptural pieces. No previous experience is required, just flair and imagination!
