LETTER CARVING WORKSHOP
with Simon Langsdale

The aim of this two day course is to introduce complete beginners to drawing lettering and the basic techniques of carving letters in stone. This course is also suitable for anyone who has had some previous experience and wishes to develop their skills.

I will bring some randomly shaped pieces of Cumbrian green slate with a natural riven surface and a selection of Purbeck stones that you can choose to carve on. Alternatively, you may have your own piece of stone that you want to use. If this is the case please speak to me about this beforehand so that I can check the suitability of the stone for carving.

I will also bring a wide selection of sources of lettering to inspire you as well as examples of my own work. In preparation, think about some short words that you may like to carve as this will save you time. Then you will be guided through the crucial drawing and design process so that you are ready to carve. Through group demonstrations and one to one tuition I will then show you the techniques that are used to carve letters in stone.

NATURE ART AND MEDITATION
Touch the Earth with Ivan Daggett

Touch the Earth is a Nature and Art based approach which offers a way of finding a connection back to ourselves through spending time alone in Nature and Art making in the studio. Although this is a non-residential course, the retreat is designed to provide a space for a few days to withdraw from the routine of life in order to nurture ourselves.

Based in Studio 2 on the top floor of Parndon Mill in Harlow, Essex and rural countryside close to Ware in Hertfordshire. The activities of time alone in Nature and Art making draw on Wilderness and Archetypal Psychology, and from Spiritual Ecology: 10 Practises to Reawaken the Sacred in Everyday Life by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee and Hilary Hart.

An outline of the three days will be given at the start, followed by guidance for a simple breath awareness meditation, which will be offered as the main meditation practise throughout the retreat. Within this, perspectives on Nature, Art and the Sacred will be explored as part of the inquiry into a connection back to ourselves. For the periods of time alone, support is offered in giving yourself permission to be with nature however you want to - leaving behind conventional accepted ways of being are encouraged!

In the studio we talk a little and create images related to our experiences, using drawing, painting and sculpture methods in a variety of materials. On one of the days we will watch the film Aluna (the mind inside nature), directed by Alan Ereira and the Kogi, an aboriginal people of Colombia.
