Summer School

3rd - 19th August 2019 

During August Parndon Mill artists offer workshops and classes in art and craftwork.

Drawing and Painting, Photography, Jewellery, Ceramics, Calligraphy, Glass Blowing, Sand Casting and Kiln Formed Glass, Stained Glass, Perspective, Tutu making and a Nature Connection Retreat

Some are single sessions for a morning or an afternoon, others are one, two or three day courses. Beginners are welcome as are those who wish to extend their skill.
Contact the artists directly to learn more, or to make a booking. You will be asked for a deposit when you book a session.
Many of the artists run regular classes and offer further tuition for those who wish to extend the skills they have acquired at Summer School.



DRAWING AND PAINTING

“I can teach anyone and everyone to paint or draw” says Deana Kim Page, and she does! An acrylic painting or a pencil drawing will be made based on an A4 image or a photograph which each student must bring. The classes are fun and inspiring and suit all ages from 6 years upwards.

DRAWING

This is an opportunity to explore different mediums, pencil, charcoal and pastels, making images using a variety of still life subject areas.

Portraits with a female sitter. We will study form, tone and mark making and gain tips of how to capture personality.

NATURE CONNECTION 
with Ivan Daggett, Maria Warner and Faye Ketteridge

This three day workshop retreat is a collaboration between Turning Tree Arts and Luna, which combines time alone in Nature with Art and Herbalism. Day 1. Foraging, herbal balm ointment and/or room spray and preparations for the next day. Day 2. Time alone in nature, followed by creating art in the studio and a campfire in the evening. Day 3. Completing artwork and final time for reflection on the three day’s activities.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Better Smartphone Photography: Learn how to get more out of your camera on your phone along with some great tips on how to compose a photo. Suitable for smartphone or tablets.

Monday 5th, 10 am - 1 pm, single session.

Black and White Photography: Learn how to take a great black and white image and how to edit a colour photo into black and white successfully. Suitable for any type of camera including smartphones. 

Wednesday 7th, 10 am - 1 pm, single session. 

Introduction to Macro Photography: Come and discover the world of macro photography. A three hour practical session on both techniques and equipment. Suitable for most camera - you do not need macro equipment to attend this workshop. 

Friday 9th, 10 am - 1 pm, single session.

CERAMICS

with Geli (Angelika Hinton)

Informal and relaxed small group classes bring out the artist in you. Whether a complete beginner, or already a keen sculptor - all are welcome. Have a go at a hedgehog for the garden, a butterfly, a baby owl or perhaps a kitchen platter.  Some of Geli's own sculpture has been described as “quirky”. She has a good sense of humour. The first sessions will concentrate on making the pieces which will be ready to be glazed on second session.

Silver ring making with Yuki Kokai

This course will suit absolute beginners and will give you the opportunity to make a silver ring that you can take home and wear with pride! There will be various suggested designs for you to choose from. You will learn basic jewellery making and silversmith techniques, including soldering, shaping, cutting, texturing and polishing. This is a great opportunity to taste a traditional craft and do something fun!

On this one day workshop you will learn the basics of making a small stained glass panel, cutting the glass and assembling it with lead.

Calligraphy for beginners and improvers: These 2 day taster sessions re-introduce the tools and techniques of formal writing, to begin to master a lettering style to use in your own ‘word pictures’.

GLASSBLOWING

Jon offers glass blowing tuition for beginners and intermediate glass blowers. In the fully equipped glass hot-shop the students will learn all about the ancient and magical craft of glassmaking. On the first taster lesson students will be taught how to make glass marbles, small paperweights, glass baubles and vessels, all of which can be taken home when finished. In a further session a higher level of skill will be attained.

PROFESSIONAL TUTU MAKING
with Rossetti Couture 

Theresa Blake offers one-to-one tuition over two individual days (with some "homework" in between!). You will have the undivided attention of a tutu maker who has cut, made and fitted tutus for Royal Ballet Principal dancers, and designed tutus for world-class young dancers. Students can extend their skills for their own businesses, or learn to make tutus for the sheer enjoyment of it!

GLASS SAND CASTING 
With Ewa Wawryzniak and Jon Lewis.

Each student will make three glass pieces to take away after a three day cooling process. Sand moulds are designed and made using forms, shapes and colours then molten glass is poured into them. First timers and professionals are welcome.

KILN FORMED GLASS

Courses in fused and slumped glass, combining glass, colours and metals, are suitable for complete beginners to the more advanced. All students will come away with several completed pieces. Classes can be for individuals or groups.
