An Exhibition of Works of Art Based on Text and Lettering Spring 2007 brings this exciting exhibition in The Gallery at Parndon Mill. It will show the work of several artists who use letter forms as an integral part of their artworks. ARTISTS Their use of words and letters is vary varied, for instance, a calligrapher uses text in a fairly conventional manner except that many of her pieces are three dimensional, their substance and design to be considered along with their literal meaning. Prints depicting words from jazz and blues evoke the mood of the song through colour and shape as well as text. A series of paintings based on the destruction of Pompeii and rediscovery of the town after excavation include the Latin graffiti, mainly political slogans, which remain on the walls along with the vibrant colours. Sculptors in glass and wood include text in their work which is in itself meaningful, but also adds decorative interest to the surfaces. A textile artist uses letters and symbols as an indecipherable text which creates the texture and form of her magnificent wall hangings. This promises to be an intriguing exhibition.
