In January it is a delight to be reminded of the glories of high Summer and this exhibition does just that. Looking at the watercolours and coloured etchings of flowers by Dilys Hallybone one can almost feel sunshine and a Summer breeze.
So too in Alan Burgess's paintings of the riverbank, Hunsdon Mead in full bloom, and, aptly, of the wintergardens in Cambridge.
Fiona Scheibl's studies of a vase of flowers gradually wilting and Glynnis Bainbridge's stitched pictures of tulips might remind us of Summer's transience, but Sue Kennedy's glorious photographs and John Sellings' sensitive paintings and prints summon expectations of the seasons to come.
Sue McDonald's intriguing paintings of exotic blooms add a touch of surrealism to this collection which also includes ceramics and glass with a floral theme and even flowers made of steel. The metal waterlilies on the river are still blooming even in the middle of Winter! |
